A scarce and unusual, early sales dummy with 1878 pencil ownership. A typical in its format, it is bound in green blind and gilt-stamped publisher's cloth, having an ornate, central gilt design on the front cover incorporating the word 'SPECIMEN' on a half-circular ribbon topping and circular laural design which surrounds the publisher's monogram 'CPG' and with the title & publisher's name & N.Y. address below. Bound within is the title page and table of contents to the first volume followed a sample of pages and illustrations from various volumes of the set, which in turn is followed by several blank, ruled pages for entering orders. The set was issued in 6 volumes. Order pages unfilled.
